FAQs

WHAT IS STUMP GRINDING?

The stump grinding process involves using specialised equipment that will grind the stump down, reducing it to chips. Grinding is usually one of the fastest ways to get rid of a stump, removing the stump from sight and improving the look of your property. Without the eyesore and tripping hazard of a stubborn stump, you will have a blank canvas and can use the area as you choose, growing new grass, planting flowers or building a new structure nearby.

WILL THE ROOTS CARRY ON GROWING?

The answer is that no, roots cannot resprout after the stump has been ground down. What happens to the roots is that they will slowly start to deteriorate over time. The way that roots decompose will not leave any sort of vacuum so to speak of and will die off into the surrounding soil.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE STUMP GRINDINGS

Once a stump has been ground down and is a pile of wood chips, the chips can be used as mulch and will compost down feeding the soil. Unless requested while being quoted, the waste will be left in a pile where the stump was as this area may sink as the ground settles.

HOW ARE TREE STUMPS REMOVED?

There are various ways to remove a stump, and we should consider each method separately.

Manual removal

Remove the soil around the entire stump to expose and loosen the roots.

Sever all the roots as you find them, continuing to remove soil until you uncover the taproot.

Clear the soil around the taproot and sever it.

Prise the stump from the ground.

This can be hard work and might take up to 12 hours if done by hand.

Using a grinder

A stump grinder is a mechanical chisel that turns a stump into wood chips and sawdust.

The time taken to grind a stump depends on its size and the hardness of the wood. A stump can take from 1-8 hours.

CAN I REMOVE A TREE STUMP MYSELF?

If you want to save some money, remove a stump yourself. However, the job takes much longer than using a professional.
